April - June News Letter

Spring is upon us and plant material is starting to grow, now is the time for several important landscape maintenance items to occur.  Start implementing those plans you made earlier for new landscape projects.  Spring is an excellent time for planting as well as Hardscape installations.

Spring-Summer Landscape Planting & Hardscape Work.  Maybe you have been thinking about adding some additional items to your landscape garden investment. Allow Apple Blossom Landscape Concepts to finish the next phase of your landscape project.  Please call soon to set up an appointment so you won‘t miss out on the Spring-Summer  planting season.

Lawn Maintenance in the spring should start with a good raking of your lawn especially where the snow or high traffic may have laid it down.  Areas that have burned out, melted out or have rodent damage need a brisk raking to help the turf recover.  If the roots have not been damaged to much, most of the time, the lawn will recover.  For areas with severe damage you may have to overseed with a blend of Kentucky Blue Grass.  Remember to review your proper maintenance and fertilizing practices for your lawn covered in the written information we left you when we completed your project.

Lawn mower cleaning, blade sharpening and maintenance should be an on going item.  Make sure your blades are sharp.  Check your oil every time before you start your machine. Pick up any hazardous items in your lawn before you start mowing and check that the machine is in safe operating order as well.  More information on safety procedures can be found in your equipment owners manual.

Check the overall health of your plantings.  You may wish to replace or add new plantings to your beds at this time.  If plant material is in poor health, check with Apple Blossom Landscape Concepts. If under our warrantee the item may be replaced at no charge.  Check for damage and shifting to all Hardscape areas in your landscape.  If you have any concerns regarding these items please contact Apple Blossom Landscape Concepts. If under our warrantee the item will be repaired at no charge.

Adjust your guide ropes on your trees so as to not girdle the tree.  This should be done several times in the season till these line are ready to be removed.

Start your Spring-Summer pest & disease management program.  Those pesky little problems that popped up in your landscape last season should be addressed now.  For more help on this see our “Landscape Technologies” section and click on Horticultural Tips.  If you are a client, contact us and we will be more than happy to help you find a solution.

Fertilization of plantings and turf need to be on going during the season.  The first step for you to take is to decide who’s going to do it. Will you do it yourself or hire a professional to do it. There are pros and cons to both routes.  No matter what route you take , PLEASE FERTILIZE.  Your plants deplete their food source in the soil.  Farmers, for thousands of years, have fertilized their crops to feed and protect them.  A properly fed landscape or crop will reap many dividends.  As always, if you are a client,  please call us at Apple Blossom Landscape to help you with your fertilizing questions.

Water your plantings.  Different plants & soil types need various amounts of water. If the ground has thawed enough that you can dig into the ground easily then it may be time to start watering.   Pulling the old hoses out and watering your parched plants will benefit them.  Be careful not to over water however, this can be just as bad as under watering them. If our clients have any questions please refer to the written instructions we left you or call us with any questions.

Plan for new landscape projects and annual plantings.  Now is the time to be planting  annual plantings and flowers as well as vegetable gardens.  Make sure it is after all fear of frost is gone and or you follow any label instructions for plantings.  Use the plans you made for location of items, and make sure you have prepared those areas properly.
